A photographic account of heavy music in Portland, Maine
The two-day run at Empire is over and nothing got broken.
See? Metalheads can have nice things.
Don’t get us wrong. We love the come-as-you-are vibe at Geno’s and Mathew’s (and, frankly, it’s the only look we can pull off), but it was a sweet change of pace to see some of our favorite musicians illuminated under bright lights and swathed in a cool blanket of electric fog. Let’s hope this is the start of a bright future for Portland’s heavyweights.
Speaking of Geno’s and Mathew’s … Tonight, both locations are throwing heavy shows. Mathewsfest II kicks off today at 5 p.m. and features Mouth Washington, Swamp Water and more. At Geno’s it’s a four-band lineup starting with über-precise Portlanders Dead by Now and out-of-towners Scalpel, Kaos Reign and Lightsbane.
(We have a paying gig at the ass crack of dawn tomorrow, so we’ll be taking the night off. Have fun, er’rybody.)
Full-resolution photos are here. If you borrow these images for Facebook or whatnot, please credit us. (Watermarking sucks and we don’t wanna do it.) Also, don’t crop or alter.
Despite all this, we’re not monsters.
