PHOTOS: Farewell, Awaas
Summer finally alighted on the coast of Maine yesterday, just in time for it to fly south again — a fitting backdrop for the release of Awaas‘ long-awaited LP and their subsequent disbandment.
For a few fleeting hours Sunday, our damp, windswept corner of the universe was certifiably hot. From the deck of Casblanca Cruises, a lucky few absorbed Tibetan-grade sunshine during Big Fun on a Boat — a four-hour loop of Casco Bay with Mount Sharp, Mouth Washington, Dream Reaper and Awaas providing the soundtrack.
Tomorrow, be sure to check out Stasis, Zvi and Dead by Now at Geno’s. The show begins at 9 p.m. Tuesday at 625 Congress St. 5 bucks.
Mouth Washington drummer Zach Hansen during Big Fun on a Boat on Casablanca Cruises. I’m pretty sure this guy fucking hated being photographed, but every shot we took of him was pure gold.
Here’s another example of planets aligning. Awaas’ final performance was held on Casablanca Cruises, a rather unique environment for concert photography. As such, I tried to be keenly aware of the other boats in the bay — opportunities to weave them into the story. When this sloop approached our port bow, I knew it was time to get ready. As luck would have it, the ever-flamboyant Beth Dazet had dressed in a dazzling mermaid costume and she raised her arm at the precise moment of symmetry when the boats were beam-on-beam. Also, it’s impossible to take a bad picture of Zachary Howard.
This fun guy was having more fun than just about anyone during Big Fun on a Boat — a kickass sendoff party for Awaas on Casablanca Cruises.
