Post Mortem

A photographic account of heavy music in Portland, Maine

Master list, beta version

The master list of heavy bands is taking shape.

In early August, we put out a call for information from Portland-area bands and, despite it being one of the all-time most popular/most shared articles on Post Mortem (including a nod from a bona fide news source), we received a measly 12 responses.

*fart sound*

Nevertheless, we’ve forged ahead and compiled what we had in hand. You can find it here:

The list is divided into three categories: active, on hiatus and RIP. Each band’s name is hyperlinked to a subpage that includes detailed info, links and photo galleries that will be updated with each new show we attend.

As you’ll soon see, there’s a ton of missing information, and we need each band’s help to fill in the blanks. Even if we’ve covered your band in the past, we’d still like to hear from you.

Yes, we could find most of this information on our own, but we’d much rather crowdsource this. As we mentioned in mid-August, your cooperation will prevent us from botching the description of your sound, among other things. More importantly, it will save us oodles upon oodles of time, because we won’t have to open 16 browser tabs while we fish for answers, copy, paste, and invariably screw things up.

So, we’re really hoping for a Stone Soup–style situation to arise out of this. After all, this is a hobby, not a paying gig, and stone-cold research is not our idea of fun.

To give you a glimpse of the potential, take a look at the entries from these cool kids: Capture the Sun, Hessian, Superorder and Zud.

To re-cap, we want to create a master list of every heavy band in greater Portland — whether active, on hiatus or stone-ass dead. When finished, it’ll be a one-stop shop for info and links on every bad motherfucker in the land. Please help us by providing the following info on your band:

  • Status: active/hiatus/dead
  • Year formed/year of hiatus or break-up
  • Members’ names and their instruments
  • Brief description of sound. Two sentences maximum. While we acknowledge that no one likes to be pigeonholed, labels are still useful. If you’re doom, death, black, etc., go ahead and say it. Feel free to get abstract with the second sentence.
  • Discography
  • Links to websites/social media, in the order of your preference (i.e., if Facebook is the best way to stay in touch with your audience, put that first on the list [but, really, y’all should get on Twitter, post haste]).
  • Contact information (optional)

Send this information to Please include the words “master list” in the subject line. We’ll add the info to the list and do our best to keep it current thereafter.

Here are some eligibility requirements:

  1. You must be heavy. We respect punk, hip-hop and indie rock as much as the next guy, but this is not the place for it.
  2. We only want bands whose home turf is Portland, Maine. We’ll also accept bands that reside in bordering towns. (Sawtopsy, we’re looking at you.) (Holyfilth, you get honorary Portland status in our book.)
  3. Your band must have played at least two shows in at least two venues within Portland. We’ll accept basement shows as long as fliers were posted and it wasn’t a private party.
  4. You must have at least 100 Facebook followers. This isn’t a popularity contest or anything, but we need to keep the list tight and informative, not burdened by side projects and one-offs. If your band lived and died in the glorious era before Facebook, we’ll make an exception as long as all above criteria are met.

Also, don’t forget to catch Cushing and Swamp Water tonight at Empire. (See what we did there?) Here’s show info.

Many thanks,

UPDATE: We’re now up to 18 responses. Keep ’em coming. Thanks.
